My last search of the DigiKey site was unsuccessful, i.e. it didn't turn up any 68HC705's ... I wonder what happened there ...

Ahhh ... I see ... they've got no stock, that is, if you check the "in-stock" box, it indicates it has none.

This way I can start with Craig Peacock's code from beyondlogic.com and simply remove the parallel-to-serial and bit-timing code, and substitute a single port-write followed by a toggle of the strobe instead.

That seems to solve the problem, provided I can find someone who can actually ship a few of these parts. In the meantime, I can look for some other 20-pin DIP ... since the target-application circuit is wire-wrapped.
