If anyone else wants to chime in the address is support2@ftdichip.com (Scotland - I believe headquarters). I have mentioned it, when I started out I had a look at the SPI and when I found out that it would not work with HW SPI (at that time the 'pad it' solution was not given) I stated "when it is so I am forced to go the UART route".
