The other idea is to outsource it to countries where the cost of labour is comparable to cost of the connector; but that implies somewhat higher than small volumes. Of course, there is also a volume level above which the renowned connector manufacturers would be happy to provide you with any type of connector you need... :-)

If it would be a point-to-point connection with D-subs at both ends and a maybe slightly higher than the smallest volume, you might also consider getting machine-crimped pin-wire-pin assemblies, to speed up somewhat the process.
