Yeah, kinda, with some of the information implied by the layout of the table rather than being explicitly represented by the text. Right? I suppose a program could be made to figure that out.

I looked at that Xilinx tutorial you mentioned and got a bit of a feel for ABEL from the examples presented there. From those examples, at least, it seems like a person would have a hard time thinking about or designing a state machine in terms of ABEL. (And the very fact that somebody bothered to build a tool that generates ABEL code from a state machine diagram sort of confirms my suspicion.)

It still seems like the hardest part of making a text-to-state diagram translator would be locating the states on the diagram. Maybe this problem is similar to that of locating the parts on a PCB when doing a board layout. Hmm ...
