I can think of several reasons off the top of my head where reading the ROM might be convenient, not theft, and not an attempt at reverse-engineering (where starting from scratch would be faster). For example to find out if some chip really contains version 1.03 of the firmware and not version 1.03beta (which, due to sloppiness, also reports its version to be 1.03). |
