#138731 - Remote control Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I once used PCAnywhere to obtain a phone connection to my DSL-connected home computer by means of which I could use my internet connection from a notebook at another location. PCAnywhere allows the remote PC to function as the console of the local, internet connected, PC such that it can download to/from the local PC and to/from the remote one.

Erik If the OP's goal is simply the remote control of his office PC, then pcAnywhere or similar software is a viable option. If the goal is general Internet browsing, however, this is a suboptimal choice; more bandwidth is required to display a remote browser window than to provide a stream of the same content to a browser that runs locally, and thus renders the content there as well. Note, however, that for remote control, numerous options exist, including Windows XP/2003's Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop Connection features. I've never looked into the details of RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) that powers these two features, but they tend to perform better than third party solutions in low-bandwidth situations; that leads me to believe they are integrated into the Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface), and likely transmit a number of graphical constructs in a non-bitmap form. Both of these features operate over TCP/IP networks, including a dialup connection like the one I described in my previous post. --Sasha Jevtic |
