#121466 - re: more background
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Thanks a lot Russell for such a detailed and brilliant reply.
It has been really really helpful. I would try to answer some of your questions here which infact you have guessed answers of anyway.

Did this unit ever work? I gather it did at some stage otherwise it would be a warranty issue. So if it did work at some stage, what has changed to have it stop working?

Yes this unit has been working for atleast 10 years, but needless to say that blowing traics have always been an issue. But recently it has just gone mental, as every second board is having faults. I guess that the only thing changed is triac type, we used in start BTA08 traic and now are using BTA12.

How about the motor? Maybe the bearings are failing so the motor has a greater startup current? What about the stuff the motor drives?

Motors are same as we use same motor on another machine, and more or less same motor control circuit. that machine never gives problems. The load that motor is driving is same as well.

Has the triac been changed for a different type?

Yes we started with BTA08 600BW, and now are using BTA12 600BW, but the reason for change was to get rid of problem.

Have you checked C1 & C2 to see that they are actually still functional - if in doubt, replace them as they are cheap items (be sure to use X2 rated capcitors).

No I have not, how can I check capacitors?? could you please advice.

Check the motor start and run current. Check the motor start caps (these can degrade over time).

Motor start and run current are normal, I have checked them. Is it possible to check spikes around Traic using oscilloscope??

I appreciate that without actually knowing all of circuit you have suggested few things to look into.

Kaz
