4-5Mhz I/O control IS fast for an 8051, but outside of that, yes I agree..it's NOT fast.

Thanks for the ideas. I do think programmable logic may be the best bet for this in the end. But i'm going to have to come up with a fairly cheap logic solution if I go that route.
