I haven't recently looked at ARM MCU's. Do they come with 4MBytes of internal FLASH and 16 MB of internal RAM nowadays

I do not know, what I wondered about was why you specifically stated "any application that required external memory" not "any application that requires this kind of power" or such. Is "requiring external memory" the only criteria that would make you choose an ARM.
