I hope I didn't say that "MOST" modern 805x's still support the original 805x external memory interface, though many of them do. The ones that I've fiddled with all have it, but that's because I started out knowing that I need it.
What I meant to emphasize is that, while there are many 805x's that have on-chip ADC's, there aren't as many that have on-chip DAC's. I do find it convenient that the "big" SiLabs parts, at least the 'F12x's, among others, support that external memory bus, and, in fact, provide a demultiplexed version. My app's require a drop-in replacement for the original Intel part, at least as far as pinout is concerned. Fortunately, some of the modern 805x-core products that do support the external memory bus allow the external bus timing to be adjusted somewhat so it will still "talk" at a rate that some external devices can keep up.
