It seems to me that solution with hinged loaded lid can be simple and cheap.
while I agree with the two other posters about "simple and cheap" vs "good enough" I have one comment: you mentioned garbage. This, in my opinion eliminates all thoughts about photocells (they will get dirty) a microswitch will need some pressure, does the smallest "object" weigh enough. IF the "hinged loaded lid" is otherwise satisfactory, I would recommend a hall-effect sensor.
