I was not proposing that you would operate the remote functions over the existing serial interface. Instead I proposed that you could establish a separate interface from your control computer/MCU (I don't really know which you are doing) and have it directly emulate the IR remote control - either by producing the 36/38kHz modulated IR light waveforms or by producing the modulation envelope signal that you could hard wire in where the existing sign IR receiver connects in. Those proposals are not useful if you do not want to have access to the functionality thus provided by said remote control.
