I definitely do not (!) recommend changing between 8- and 9-bit modes within a transfer. Too many ways to fail when doing "standard" communication without introducing conditions outside the specification for the receiver.

I did mean running any 8-bit protocol in the 9-bit mode and manually insert an address byte (ninth bit set) at proper places to select intended listener(s).
