I have, on occasion, used a trick which is to have the slaves ISR after request from master send out address code xx whan the slave was active, but not able to immediately respond.
That makes a much shorter detection of timeouts possible.

Also, using address code yy for 'ACK' and address code zz for 'no message' can increase efficiency.
