And a USB-to-Serial adaptor will also be useful for manu other things besides just programming.

I wouldn't class Aten as "high quality" - their drivers enumerate as a different COM number depending on which physical USB socket you plug them into.

Avoid Bafo and other cheap stuff, their drivers enumerate them as HID.

I have a Bafo and I'd agree with you classing it as "cheap stuff" - but the drivers I have do enumerate as COM ports.

Best results, for me, seem to come from stuff based on FTDI chips
