#174941 - Throughput? Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I want to develop a general purpose card that acquire analog signals and send it to the pc. Reason for using the PCI Card is that its safe as it is installed once in the chasis of the pc. so i prefer PCI card inplace of any other communication technique. How many signals at which resolution and which speed? In others words what is the expected throughput? Michael Karas said:
For today and looking forward you should NOT consider making a PCI board. If you have your head set on a board-in-slot solution then instead make one with a PCIe interface. If I were setting out to make some type of acquisition device I would look strongly into using a USB port to interface it to the computer. I fully agree. And if you want it inside the PC, you can still use USB as most PC's have it internally on a pin header. There are 8051's with integrated USB device interface and analog inputs. The only advantages of PCI over USB are bandwidth and latency. But if you don't use an RTOS I doubt you need them. OTOH if you make an external data acquisition device using USB, you don't have to worry about signal integrity as much and can use long cables. Remember the PC is a very noisy environment. Maarten |
