In the end, quite few microcontroller applications have any use for these transfer rates. Hm, mass storage controller might be an application where 480 Mbit/s would be appropriate. However, there probably aren't all that many applications of a '51 that could utilize such bandwidth. I believe some of the new ARM Cortex-M3-based parts come with USB 2.0 High Speed support. But mass storage controller requiers that the processor has a second high-speed interface for sending the data further, or that it is fast enough that it can read and process the data or that it can create data at the required speeds. The ARM controllers can keep a 12Mbps link busy without breaking a sweat, but getting close to the 35-40MB/s a USB disk can handle takes a lot of processing power. But since a lot of processors are now fast enough to choke the 12Mbps full speed, I expect that we will see a great increase in high-speed compatible processors, even if they can't manage maximum speed continuously. |
