#171329 - GNU as and '51
Responding to: ???'s previous message
While off subject, let me just add an interesting, and now unfortunately just a historical, remark.

While the GNU as assembler does not contain 8051 support, there used to be once a derivative work porting as and a few other programs from the GNU binutils suite to enable a GNU-style 8051 development suite. It's author used it to develop the Web-51 TCP/IP/Ethernet bundle - its website is still alive, and the downloads appear to be still available as well.

Now you might ask, why did it not appear in the official line. The answer is simple: although the FSF proclaims the GPL licence as a prototypal "take and give back",their maniacally legalese politics effectively prevents the "give back" portion except for the most persistent. The author of said '51 port, after offering his work for the GNU people, rather than being taken up and supported, had been shortly instructed to do some potentially complex and lengthy paperwork - naturally, he simply lost interest...
