#168445 - FIFO allows more jitter in response times
Responding to: ???'s previous message

If the receiving side doesn't have a FIFO, then it will not be enough that the average speed of the receiver is good enough.
FIFO not required many apps keep up without one

The issue here is that with a FIFO, it is enough if the receiver is fast enough "on average". Without a FIFO, it must be fast enough for every single character. The FIFO allows more jitter in the response times.
