The AT89S52 is from the software point of view a superset of the classical intel 80C52 (and differs from 8052 only in existence of low-power modes). It's the added SFRs which might be of interest, and they are listed in the migration document of Atmel (the AT89C52 is a full equivalent to the 80C52).
