You mean, "The LCDs I have used have had polarity opposite"

I think the problem here is assuming there is a universal standard. I did some Googling and I do see a number of pages that indicate the reversed pinout. But the SBC was built to the above datasheet which definitely indicates a pin 1 of Vcc and pin 2 as ground, and it has worked with a number of alternate LCDs that I've acquired from Digikey.
