Hi Bert,
You are correct about the board shop (the PWB manufacturer) not requiring fiducials. If they use them they will be panel fiducials and they will put them on the panels. As for the assembly shop, it's whether or not the parts are placed by machine, not whether they are through-hole or surfact mount, that makes fiducials useful. Remember there were board stuffers (automated through-hole placement machines) long before there were surface mount parts. In fact, proper alignment is even more critical for through-hole than surface mount. That said, with modern "intelligent" vision systems, most use the pads of the land pattern as fiducials, which is to say they align the part directly to the pads, making normal fiducials superfluous. Of course, that will depend on the assembly shop you use. |
