#183139 - Hot Swap Power and I2C
Hello all,

For a design I'm looking for a simple reliable way to make hot swapping possible for an I2C bus and a +12V power Supply.
The bus and power are used by modules which have to be connected / disconnected when live.
The connection is done by a short (30cm) cable. Supply current is approx 150mA.

I found the I2C hotswapping thread on this forum which gives me an NXP part to cover the I2C bus.
http://old.8052.com/forum/printable.phtml?id=106018&thread=105721

I have seen some nice parts from Linear to do the power part but I was wondering if there is an IC which covers both.

Seems to me that in racksystems (module / backplane) this is a very common situation.
Another design issue is the package : no ballgrids or QFN. I don't have the tools yet to handle this type of parts.

Another question : is it neccesary to have the GND pin in a connector always make the first contact when the cable is inserted?

Thanks in advance !

Peter
