I guess I could chip in here as well. Recently, my client was in need for a few 100 pcs of 24C512 serial EEPROM. The stuff we got from the market was marked ATMLU942 and was sold to him as ATMEL 24C512. Since the chip did not work, I was asked to investigate the IC since the board was my design. There exists a few ( less than 10) hits on Google linking to some dead datasheets of ATMLU942; perhaps to make it look authentic. Convinced it was a fake, I asked my supplier to get me 24C512. Again the same stuff came back around. On rejecting it, the supplier quietly took it back since he knew they were fakes. His supplier had the cheek to call me saying ATMEL had renamed their range of memory as ATML whatever. Similar for Microchip which was now called something like MCHP some.
Some ridiculous stuff going around the world. |
