I suspect it could also be that someone once gave this careful though, and reached a considered design decision in the light of their specific requirements - but now it's just "copycat" with people not thinking at all...

Very true.

7 out of 10 products that come to me, are for reverse engineering or just "copy the design". And I have a tough time to explain it to them that it is better to design your own product rather than copying. 5 of them agree and get the new one developed, but 2 of them go and get it "copied" from other designers.

And to top it all, a person came to me to get a funny development project:
The aim was to make a programmer, that will unlock the Fuse of MCS51 CPUs particularly AT89C52.
Now thats real funny !!!

I have seen the mind set of many manufacturers here. If one person develops a genuine product, you will find atleast 25 people trying to copy it including the PCB and reverse-engineering the CPU; or trying to get the Hex file from the employees of that company.

There are 2 classic cases: Weighing scales and Moving message displays.

Moving message displays was originally designed by some retired military person from Pune, and you could find 80% of Moving Message displays having the same functions, peripherals, SerialPortprotocol, Fonts, etc...They even have the same design problems in all of them.

But in the last 2 years, I have seen many new people who have genuinely developed and brought better products than those I could see before.

I think people have really started to develop and improve their designs.

But the important point is they all agree that the CPU must be MCS51. So MCS51 is going to be there atleast for the next 10 years;

and 8052.com will make it atleast 25 years....I am sure about that.
