...and we even talked about hardware... ... including hardware used in the breweries ... Steve M. Taylor said:
We visited Manchester Science museum to see the "Baby computer",... ... but were not allowed to run our own programs. It is a great example of how far the technology advanced during those quite few years. Also, a fine example of engineering: one of the video tubes - not the memory one, but the displaying one - was balanced out on a conveniently sized cardboard box... Steve M. Taylor said:
We saw the giant working engine here
http://www.ellenroad.org.uk/History/V...andra.aspx - 3000HP We spent maybe a half an hour watching it to start up, run and then slow down to stop. Athough it might seem unrelated to 8051, it actually made me think not only about how all those small and big pieces of metal (8051: silicon) click and move in perfect harmony to make the whole big thing moving, but also how fast the technology and its "surroundings" changes. Next to the building with the big big steam engine (not to mention the other building where the boilers were), a jet engine was demonstrated, of a power output of about 1/3 of the big engine upstairs, but with dimensions allowing to carry it in the trunk of a standard passanger car. --- I enjoyed this a lot, and hope we will be able to organize a 8052.com meetup again some time.
