Both SiLabs and FTDI solutions are all-in-one these days. No need for external crystal or eeprom anymore. Both have a VCP and a DLL software interface. If you just want to use them as is you don't even need to get a VID/PID.

SiLabs is the smallest, but harder to assemble (by hand). FTDI can go (a bit) faster and has more features.

The biggest gotcha with both these devices is that the transfers are scheduled by the USB host at 1ms intervals. So a simple "send a byte, receive a byte" protocol might not reach expected transfer rate.
