CLI Standards vary

Yes, good point - that is very true!

Technical specifications for BT's services are available from: http://www.sinet.bt.com/index.htm

The ones for BT's CLI Service are:

SIN 227: CDS Calling Line Identification Service - Service Description
http://www.sinet.bt.com/227v3p5.pdf

SIN 242: CDS Calling Line Identification Service, TE Requirements; Part 1 Idle State, Down Stream Signalling, Part 2 Loop State Signalling.
http://www.sinet.bt.com/242v2p3.pdf

I don't know about other UK operators - but that link provided by Ap Charles suggests that they may well differ:
http://www.ainslie.org.uk/callerid/cli_faq.htm#Q_6

So, back to the original question of "can it be read by a modem", the answer would have to be RTFM for the particular modem and telephone line in question...
