The original circuit Chico refers to has additional disadvantages: If the wiper of pot is entirely right or left, the battery is short-circuited by the micro for a brief period. Not a good idea for a battery powered circuit, not even mentioning the possible damage within the micro.

The caps are always discharged by short circuits, by the way. And when charging the caps the leakage currents of corresponding port lines warp the measurement.
