Do you shut off power to the coils after the motor has stopped moving? You should bring all the motor coils to ground at both ends (and centertap if you have 6 leads instead of 4). This will still brake the motor but won't consume power.
If you just leave the coils on in the last position you are consuming power to brake the motor, or hold it in position. If you ground the coils the stepper becomes a generator...effectively a brake. Don't just shut off power as that leaves the coils open, no braking. |
