Indeed, an appropriate LCD can be used to gate the laser light. Modulation rate now depends upon how fast you can twist the crystals of the LCD. You can then direct the gated laser beam at a mirror (or mirrors) mounted on a galvo assembly to support steering the laser beam around the room!!
