Why Not. Yes an optimal design will use a built in CAN. A lot of pluses there. But for a hobby or low volume project it maybe better to use tools you have handy. microchip makes the chips so they must be selling them to somebody.

Hobbyist like DIP packages. They are easier to work with. And disappearing fast. So making that number one criteria may not be a good idea.
