resistors between 3V3 MCU and LCD data pins (5k6).
LCD is powered by 5V reg. works - kind of, but you will encur all kinds of delay what is far better and will cost you $0.20 is to insert a HCT chip as a level converter. HCT has 3V3 characteristics for the input and 5V characteristics for the output. In the other direction (5V to 3V3) chips like the LVC4245 do the job.
