resistors between 3V3 MCU and LCD data pins (5k6).
LCD is powered by 5V reg.

works - kind of, but you will encur all kinds of delay

what is far better and will cost you $0.20 is to insert a HCT chip as a level converter.

HCT has 3V3 characteristics for the input and 5V characteristics for the output.

In the other direction (5V to 3V3) chips like the LVC4245 do the job. (the LVC4245 can, of course be used either way)
