virtually any (commercial) switcher I know of has a crowbar circuit that will blow your fuse if Vo goes too high. I have seen no linear regulator with that feature and I have seen a linear making Vo = Vin. I.e. if you have a regulator error a switcher will blow your fuse and a linear will blow the rest of your circuit. Of course, should you so desire, you can add a crowbar to your linear.
