I'm working on a gas detector at the moment, and the issue of detector calibration occupies a considerable amount of effort. The datasheet clearly explains the issue, and professional safety engineers are well aware of them. In safety critical application, the safety engineer will draw up a maintenance and test schedule which will call for detectors to be tested regularly with a calibration gas mix.
