Bean , you can use a prescaler IC , take for example MB506 to get rid of distortions . In this case if the prescaler divides the signal by 64 . The gating time could be 640 miliseconds , so the total scaling factor is 1/100. you may achieve 100 Hz resolving power easily if the input is from 10MHz to 2.4GHz , if I recall correctly MB506 could be used for low freq as well , you require tricky PCB layouts and BNC connectors as well.
