#144466 - let's put it in this way
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Microcontrollers have features suitable for - intensive interrupt processing on chip, bit/pin-wise manipulation, communication interfaces. They even have special instructions (such as the bit operations) to support this hardware; usually at the cost of less effective memory manipulation (and fewer memory is anticipated). And they are more cost intensive than the general purpose microcontroller of a similar "caliber" as it is anticipated they will be used in large volumes in toys and white/black goods (sorry, household and entertainment) etc. I deliberately don't mention the onchip memories, figure yourself.

Of course there is no sharp borderline etc.etc...

I thought about these subtle differences, when I read about a new microcontroller called "fido" by a company called "Innovasic" - I saw it in the advertisement by google here in the top banner. I realized that there is a big difference between the today's "let's glue an ARM and peripherals and memory together and call it microcontroller" approach, and "we need to wiggle bits and have timers and communicate via UART, and we need it simple and cheap" approach the guys designing '48/'51 took.

This sounds like a start of a new flame, doesn't it...
