I had a lot of trouble with a short distance 1wire app. My first problem was the week pulldown of the micro I was using, this was solved by using a Maxim/Dallas i2c->1wire chip (expensive). Next was the cable - twisted pair works much better than just a pair of wires. Signal integrity was a major problem. Personally, I wouldn't try it over any great distance! RS485 is much more robust.
