#135336 - USB-to-Centronics cables
Responding to: ???'s previous message

It seems that most new laptops have no LPT port. I have purchased an USB to DB25 cable, but it is detected as "Printer Service" under XP, which cannot be accessed directly by VB and some other programs, such as the AEC ISP 89S programmer.

All of the USB-to-Centronics (IEEE 1284) cables are designed to make a printer device (that just happens to have a Centronics port connection) available to the computer.

Remember, with USB you don't talk to the port, you talk to the device, so it makes sense that these products tell your computer that you have a printer attached, not a 1284 port.

Seems to me some clever person with time on their hands could cook up an EPP or ECP (or whatever it's called) with an SiLabs '320 device. Dunno how good the timing will be.

Perhaps the best thing to do is throw up your hands, admit defeat, and ask your vendor if they have a USB product that does what you need. Sucky, but it gets the job done.
