#130053 - Prejudice? Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Salaam Alireza,
Prejudice? I seriously doubt that you will be met with prejudice here, at least from those who frequent the forum. Prejudice, the kind you're refering to anyway, is born of racism or (as in this particular case) nationalism. But both of these behaviors are manifestations of the tendancy in all creatures to associate with like creatures. In the animal kingdom we describe this tendancy with the phrase "Birds of a feather flock together." In humans we describe it with words like "racism," and "nationalism." And it is a natural consequence of such self-imposed segregation that prejudices will develop concerning the excluded. And when those prejudices become rooted, they usually blossom into manifestations of hatred that we call bigtry. But take heart Alireza. When I worked at the SSC Laboratory, I was surrounded by people, literally from around the globe. One of my best friends was a man from Novisibiersk. We had people from Red China, from India, from a couple of countries in Africa, from Europe, literally from every continent (save Antarctica). My immediate supervisor, the man who hired me, is named Kouroush Sadaatmand. His wife is named Arghavan. And as you can probably tell from their names, they were from Iran. I tell you all of that to make this point. I observed something at the SSC Laboratory. People no longer segregated themselves by nationality, or race. They segregated themselves by education, discipline and job. In the cafeteria the physicists and engineers usually sat together, as did the technicians, as did the administrative people. And they further segregated into sub-groups as the main groups became too large. In other words, people will tend to align themselves in groups based on whatever characteristic they see as most defining in themselves. Unfortunately, for many people, the most defining characteristic they have is the color of their skin, or their mothers' locations at the time of their birth. But I have seen empirically that these mindsets can not survive education. I know it's cliche, but on an even deeper and more meaningful level, prejudice (and it's progeny bigotry) really is born of ignorance. So why does any of this matter regarding your concerns? Because here, in the 8052.com forum, the people tend to be more educated (whether by University, apprenticeship or through self-study) than in an average cross-section of population. Add to that the fact that by definition the first-order commonality among members here is an interest in ยต-controllers and embedded systems, and it really doesn't matter that someone is from Iran or India or Germany or Britain or (in my case) Oklahoma, U.S.A., any more than it matters if they're Caucasian or Negro or Hispanic or Asian. So Salaam, and Welcome Alireza. P.S. None of this is going to stop any of us from making fun of you mercilessly if you make even the tiniest, most trivial spelling or grammatical errors in your posts. Just remember that we can make fun of your English, but you can not make fun of our Farsi. ;-) |
