It would be nice to know the comparison of this and your algorithm (sort of a benchmark), speedwise,

I did a rough benchmark using the time() function and 100000 runs of the algorithm.

Speed-wise, yours comes out on top with merely ~45 seconds, while mine takes around 300 seconds. Given the different approaches and memory requirements, it's not really surprising.
