I heard about this some time ago, do not know how it is done, but they DO use DC now. Giant switched rectifiers at one end and huge inverters at the other. Really. The England-France interconnector is a DC link, to eliminate reactive losses, and to stop having to synchronise the grid over the whole of Europe. Steve |
