Do you remember using a pencil eraser to clean edge connectors?
Now that we are going down memory lane on the subject of connections, I once spent Christmas and New year in Paris, France replacing and testing boards while some junior engineers soldered pieces of resistor leads into all 'plated' vias on about 2000 boards. The company had adopted a 'new and improved' (those words always mean doom - remember Coke?) process for plating the vias and they failed intermittently.
