#120108 - it would be much easier
Responding to: ???'s previous message
If the government didn't attempt to perform in a democratic manner, it would be much easier to suppress the madness of those who see violence as the only answer.

It's long been held by some, that "that government governs best, which governs least." While this may appear to be weak, it also preserves the freedoms of the governed the best. Unfortunately, there's a balance that has tbe struck between security and personal freedom. We're experiencing a debate between the two right here inthe U.S. even now.

It would be easier if people didn't demand the personal freedoms that they demand, but they do. It would be easier if people didn't actively conceal criminals in their midst, but they do. Part of governing is striking a balance. It's unlikely there will ever be a true consensus as to which or how much of their personal freedoms citizens are willing to give up in order to enhance their personal security. The govenment seen as "weak" by some is generally also seen as "heavy-handed" by others.

Who is right? Your guess is as good as mine.
