Designing from scratch becomes difficult, because you need very precise analog circuitry too! Today, there are many special chips arround for each kind of battery. You could use these chips and arrange them arround your 8051, using the µC only for displaying and parameter setting. But even then the design of such a circuit will become a challenge.
