avrstudio supports 89S51 and 89S52 devices with the genuine ATMEL avrisp programmer. On Studio version 4 those chips are grayed out regardless of the programming hardware selected, but at least that tells me that the SPI programming should be the same for AVR and 89S or 89LP.
