Generally my recommendation is to suggest that you not use up your time making and building programming gadgets and such when there are much more productive ways for you to use your creative talent. These days there are so many better choices for MCUs that can be programmed in circuit with simple and low cost serial or JTAG adapters that you can buy ready made (and also ready known working!!).

You should put your energy into creating what you want to get the MCU to do and not in re-creating things that many other folks have done time and time again.
