The reason for having a glass surface is that you can build a device that doesn't contain any metalic parts at all, so you may touch the box as much as you like.

Obviously, there are simpler ways to create a switch function than designing a capacitive switch - especially since a capacitive switch is sensitive to external fields.

But I very much recommend the use of batteries when trying to debug the hardware.
