...first disconnect, then go to Properties-Config and select "none" in Handshake (not sure of the text, I have Spanish XP).

Also, carefully check the path from P3.1 (Tx) thru the PC (level converter MAX232 or whatever, cable, etc). Oscilloscope should be very helpful.
