You really need to spend some time doing some basic research here!

Modems of all types (not just GSM) have been using AT commands for decades - there is plenty of information available on the web!

Study the AT commands manual for your modem - it will tell you about command terminators & command formatting.

Also be sure to download and study a copy of V.250 - Serial asynchronous automatic dialling and control
This ITU standard formalises the "Hayes" AT command set - which had become a de-facto standard for modem commands.
